Tecumseh Compass Learning Center seeing positive effects of PBIS

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive framework for schools to determine how they want to teach social skills, establish expectations in all areas, prevent problematic behavior and reinforce new skills. TPS uses its Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) program to provide the appropriate academic assistance for all learners. PBIS works hand-in-hand with MTSS, providing a tiered socio-emotional support system.

Tecumseh Compass Learning Center began implementing parts of PBIS during the end of last school year, but this year Tecumseh Compass has used the framework for all learners in second through sixth grades. Having common building wide expectations where behaviors are taught and modeled has enabled all staff to create a culture where learners can thrive. Due to the successful implementation of PBIS, Tecumseh Compass is in the process of becoming a model demonstration school through a grant from Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MIBLSI) and Lenawee Intermediate School District. As a model demonstration school staff will be supported through additional professional development by the Michigan Department of Education. Lisa Shirk, the Student Support Coordinator at Compass, has been spearheading the implementation of PBIS.

“Having this framework has positively impacted our learners by using a common language and establishing consistent expectations to follow throughout our building,” said Shirk. “It has been beneficial for our learners, facilitators, and all staff and has really helped us grow our Compass culture.”

Since implementation of PBIS this school year Tecumseh Compass has seen a 33% reduction in unwanted behavior from the first quarter to the second quarter. In the first year of implementation, staff at Tecumseh Compass has focused on tier 1 supports including universal routines and procedures and an acknowledgement system that reinforces positive behaviors. With the support from the MIBLSI / LISD Tecumseh Compass will focus on implementing tier 2 behavior supports in small groups or individually based on area(s) of need.

Tecumseh Compass staff looks forward to continuing to implement PBIS for the success of all students.
