The Tecumseh South Early Learning Center library is the recipient of a Scholastic Book Grant from the Meemic Foundation. Foundation representative Jessica Johnson presented the $100 award on Friday, Nov. 9. The funds will support the purchase of new books for learners to borrow and enjoy.
“Meemic has sponsored the Scholastic Grant for a number of years to provide books to classrooms and libraries,” Johnson said. “It’s important to Meemic to partner with companies that support learning.”
Diana Edwards, South Early Learning Center administrative assistant learned of the grant opportunity and submitted the application on behalf of the library.
“I appreciate her efforts to help the library. It’s my goal to get more books into the hands of our learners,” said Tracey Rhoades, South Learning Center librarian. “There is so much they can learn from reading a variety of books.”
Rhoades said the grant is particularly important as many of the books in her collection are well-loved and need to be replaced.
“We loan books to children from ages three to seven, so they do start to see some wear and tear after a while,” she said. “This grant money will help to replace some of our older books and allow us to purchase a couple new titles as well.”
Parents and community members can also help support early literacy by visiting the Scholastic Book Fair at South Learning Center.
“Our book fair is next week, and our learners will have the opportunity to bring someone special with them to shop during lunch,” Rhoades said. “Books make great stocking stuffers, and proceeds from the sale support the purchase of new books for the library.”
Learners and their parents may shop at the book fair:
- 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14 - Friday, Nov. 16.
- 5 - 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19
- Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 1 - 3 p.m. and 5 - 8 p.m.
The South Early Learning Center library also accepts donations of gently used books. Unwanted children’s books may be delivered to the school at 2780 Sutton Rd., Adrian, MI.
