Dedication plaques from the former Herrick Park, Patterson, Sutton, and Tecumseh Acres elementary schools were returned to their original locations on Tuesday, June 5.
The plaques were removed from the schools in early 2017 following the announcement that the buildings would be renamed as a part of the district’s new strategic design.
Since that time, the plaques were held in storage at the Tecumseh Historical Museum. Recent community feedback indicated that Tecumseh residents were disappointed in the removal of the plaques.
“Our shared history is important, and it was never the district’s intention to dismiss the contributions of those who have supported education in our community through the years,” said Kelly M. Coffin, Ed.D., superintendent. “We have returned the dedication plaques to the buildings and will work with our learners to explore the building’s story and create a display to acknowledge the contributions of these individuals.”
The district requests information from the community to help create these displays. Individuals with photos, newspaper clippings, school certificates and other mementos, along with those willing to be interviewed by learners are asked to contact the district at 517-423-2167.
