Parent Glossary

Buzz: Buzz is the student management system used by Tecumseh educators to create online curriculum content that allows students to progress at their own pace. This system holds your child’s online work, including feedback from teachers and upcoming assignments. Parents have access to Buzz with their own parent log in.

Competency-Based Education: Competency-Based Education, as defined by Competency Works, is “a systems model in which (1) teaching and learning are designed to ensure students are becoming proficient by advancing on demonstrated mastery and (2) schools are organized to provide timely and differentiated support to ensure equity. A competency-based structure enables personalized learning to provide flexibility and supports to ensure mastery at the highest standards possible.” In a competency-based model, student’s strengths, needs and interest allow for “student voice and choice in what, how, when and where they learn.”

Khan Academy: A free, online resource where students can work through math lessons at their own pace. Khan Academy, created by educator Salman Khan, is a set of online tools that help educate students through short lectures and YouTube videos.

Student Expos: Student Expos occur several times throughout the school year and allow for students to share their learning with an authentic audience. Parents and community members are welcome to attend these events that happen before, during, and after the school day to see the learning process in action.

LMS: StudentM anagement System that allows educators to monitor learning progress in multiple courses in a blended learning environment. At Tecumseh Schools, we use the Buzz Learning Management System by Agilix.

MCL: Mass Customized Learning is the “umbrella” for the use of effective instructional practices in a flexible learning structure. Tecumseh works to customized learning paths for each and every child by moving from a rigid, more traditional system, to a flexible system that allows for students to continue to work and learn at their own pace.

PBL: Project-Based Learning, as defined by the Buck Institute “is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.”

Standards-Based Grading: Standards-Based Grading refers to the system of grading and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating mastery of specific knowledge and skills they are expected to learn.

STEAM: STEAM is an integrated approach to learning which requires an intentional connection between standards, assessments, and lesson design/implementation. STEAM experiences involve multiple standard integration from Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math to be taught and assessed in and through each other.

Strategic Design: Tecumseh Public Schools created a new Strategic Design (also known as a Strategic Plan) in 2016. This Strategic Design serves as the roadmap for our district and was developed with input with over 70 community members, including parents, business and community leaders, and school personnel.
