About Buzz Learner Management System
Buzz is a Learner Management System (LMS) designed to support personalized learning in online and blended courses. It offers a number of features that each school district uses differently to meet the needs of their students.
At TPS, our learners use Buzz to access class materials created by our facilitators. These materials may include the course syllabus, assessment rubrics, assignments, information sources, study materials, etc. Buzz serves as a central location for learners to find and use this class information.
Parents also have a username and password to access the Buzz Parent Observer. There they can view their child’s completed assignments and upcoming class work and monitor their child’s progress. Each building uses Buzz slightly differently, based on its needs.
North and South Early Learning Centers
Buzz is used at our K-1 buildings only as a communication tool for parents to monitor their child’s progress on the Essential Skills Checklist. South ELC families currently have access to Buzz, and families at North ELC will have access in a few weeks.
Compass Learning Center
Buzz is not used at Compass.
East and West STEAM Centers
Seventh and eighth grade learners use Buzz to access teacher-prepared materials for class. Buzz is also used to allow parents to view their child’s assignments, weekly progress and achievement. Parents have their own login information and can access this information at any time. While Buzz is useful for these weekly updates, eSchool is still the primary way that final assessments, grades and skills mastery are shared with parents and learners.
Tecumseh High School
Facilitators use Buzz in a few courses at the high school, to provide learners with access to teaching materials that they have created. Learners may access these class resources at any time.
Our learners' privacy is important to us. There are safeguards in place to protect our learners’ information and board policy requires that we provide notice to parents if data is collected from a learner for the purpose of marketing or selling that information. We do not collect data from our individual learners for this purpose. Any student performance information stored in Buzz is for district internal use only for student achievement monitoring and may be reviewed by parents/guardians.
While we have heard from several parents that they appreciate having Buzz to monitor their child’s academic progress, we have also received feedback that the software is ‘clunky’ and not user-friendly. In speaking to other competency-based learning districts, I’ve learned it is fairly common to switch learning management systems periodically as software programs continue to improve and offer more features to facilitators, learners and their parents.
As a result, we have been researching other LMS software options and will be piloting a new LMS software at our STEAM Centers over the next few months. Please look for more information to be shared with you as we get closer to that time. If the pilot goes well and we receive positive feedback, we will consider making the switch at other buildings.
Buzz (and other LMS programs) is simply one way that learners access course materials. Facilitators still work with learners in large group and small group instruction and one-on-one coaching; and use written materials to educate children. We receive no compensation for using Buzz.

Please Update Your Child's Information Online Using HAC
It's important that your child's school has the most up-to-date address, phone, and emergency contact information - and it's now easier than ever for parents / guardians to update their child(ren)'s accounts. New families may enroll and current families can now update most records information online using the Home Access Center (HAC). Please use the instructions below or use our printable step-by-step guide to update your account, or register a new student. If you have questions, please contact the main office of your child’s building.
Current TPS Families
1. Go to Home Access Center (HAC) and login using your username and password.
2. Click Registration.
3. Select the Update Registration tab.
4. Click New.
5. Review and update your child's information. At the end of each section be sure to check complete and click save before moving on to the next page.
6. When complete, click Review All, and be sure all changes are correct.
7. Check I Agree and click Submit.
New TPS Families
1. Go to Home Access Center (HAC)
2. Click Register New Account
3. Enter your child's information. At the end of each section be sure to check complete and click save before moving on to the next page.
4. When complete, click Review All, and be sure all changes are correct.
5. Check I Agree and click Submit.
- Proof of residency and immunization records may be uploaded online.
- An official birth certificate must be presented to your child’s school office to complete new learner registrations.
- Records release forms must be completed in person in your child’s school office.

Compass Learning Center developed new arrival and dismissal procedures for 2018-19 that have eliminated much of the congestion near the building at the start and end of the day. Please review the new Compass Arrival and Dismissal information.
Tecumseh East STEAM is excited to start its Equations Team for the 2018-2019 school year! All learners are welcome and encouraged to join. Equations is a creative game of mathematics where learners challenge each other using the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It's a great way to have fun using math and enhance critical thinking skills. We compete with other schools throughout the county once a month in tournaments at the Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD). It is a great way to meet other learners and engage in mathematics.
Equations practices Wednesdays and Thursdays after school Ms. Marecle's mentor room until 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to come check it out!

Android Devices Needed
Tecumseh East STEAM Center is accepting donations of old Android cell phones and tablets for learners to use in a new Project Lead the Way course. The App Creators unit will introduce learners to mobile app development and computer science. They will choose a problem that interests them from the areas of health, environment, emergency preparedness, education, community service, and school culture; then conduct research and develop an app that solves a real-world problem.

Sickness & Absences
Please review good hygiene practices with your child to help prevent the spread of colds and the flu. Good hand washing, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, and good nutrition go a long way in helping keep us all healthy.
If your child is not feeling well and is vomiting, or has a fever or rash, please keep them home for 24 hours following the symptoms. As a reminder, all rashes should be evaluated by a doctor.
Please remember on each morning of your child's absence or tardiness to call the school office at 517-423-2367 to report the absence and reason for it. Whenever possible, please send in a doctor's note to excuse your child's absence.
Dressing for the Weather
As the winter months are fast approaching, please remind your children to dress appropriately for the weather and bring with them their coats, hats, gloves, etc. Please make sure their name is on them in the event they get misplaced. Also, check with your child often about items they have brought to school to make sure they are coming home. Our Lost and Found is filling up with sweatshirts and other items that have been left at school. Please remind your child to check the Lost and Found for their belongings.
Anyone who volunteers, attends field trips, etc. at school MUST have a volunteer background check form completed and on file. Forms may be obtained in the school office or on the TPS website. When entering the school, you must first stop in the office to sign-in and be given a visitor's sticker to wear while you are in the building. Please remember to sign-out when you leave. If you bring your child to school late you must accompany him/her to the office to sign-in and receive a tardy slip. If you are signing out your child early, proper identification (driver's license) must be presented.
On April 9, our learners will take the PSAT for Math, Reading, and Writing and Language. To help prepare them for this type of standardized test, we will have learners work on Khan weekly as part of mentor time. Khan works with College Board to preparation tests and activities aligned with the PSAT. In January, mentor Learning Facilitators will get learners started in the system. Outside of mentor time, learners can put in additional time during ILT and at home to prepare for this assessment.

Testing Out of Courses
- Learners cannot attempt to test out of a class they have taken and failed.
- They can only test out of one course at a time.
- Learners are responsible for reaching out to facilitators for review information. Facilitators will not provide study guides, but may share a book or other materials learners may use.
- Learners who wish to test out of a full-year course (ex. World History) must take and pass the 1st semester exam, then they will be permitted to take the 2nd semester exam.
- Learners must earn a 78.5% on the exam to pass the class.
- If the learner passes, the course will appear on their transcript as tested out (ex. World History - Test Out). The learner will earn an 'S.' If the learner does not pass, nothing goes on the transcript.
The fall test out window has now closed. The next opportunity to test out of courses will be the week of May 20, 2019.

East STEAM Band Learner Transportation
Starting on Starting Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 East STEAM Center band learners will attend class at Compass Learning Center from 7:35 - 8:30 a.m. each day. Please note the transportation information below:
- If your East STEAM band learner rides the bus, they will be transported to and from Compass by bus - there is no need for you to make special arrangements.
- If your East STEAM band learner walks to school or takes alternate transportation, they can go directly to Compass and enter through the band room exterior door.
West STEAM Learner Transfer Buses
All learners who ride the bus will be transported to the High School in the AM to get on one of transfer buses to West. In the PM, learners will be transported from WEST to the High School to get on their regular bus home. Transfer bus numbers are as follows:

Michigan's Read by Grade Three Law
In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.
