AREA NEWS COVERAGE: Tecumseh High School students and staff surprise teacher before deployment

(WTVG) - Mr. Nick Benschoter is an Air National Guardsman. He also teaches math and heads the cadet program at Tecumseh High School.

"We have a lot to be thankful for in this building, and Nick Benschoter is one of those people," Principal Griff Mills said.

Life for Mr. Benschoter and his family is about to soon change. He's been called to active duty and will serve in an undisclosed location for six months.

"I love serving. I love my country. I love what I do," Benschoter said.

His last day at school before deployment was Tuesday, and students and staff went above and beyond to say thank you for his service.

What started off as the annual Thanksgiving volleyball tournament, ended as a beautiful tribute and surprise send-off for Mr. Benschoter.

"The support that the school, the administration, the students have given is just overwhelming for both myself and my family," Benschoter said. "I don't even know how to put it into words, just how much support they've given me."

It's clear he has the support of the entire student body. His students had nothing but favorable things to say about him.

"He's a great role model. He's kind of a father figure to all of the cadets, you know, he's more family than a teacher, but we all look up to him and respect him greatly," Cadet Cade Wilhelm said.

While life may not be the same at Tecumseh High School over the next six months, both students and staff are looking forward to welcoming him home.

"It's sad to see him go, but we'll be here to welcome him back," Wilhelm added.
