Michigan's Read by Grade Three Law

Being a good reader is critical for children to be successful in school. In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

The impact of this law began with the kindergarten class of 2017-2018. Tecumseh Public Schools educators immediately began a documented plan to assist these students and all of our early learners.

The Michigan Department of Education offers several resources about the Read by Grade Three Law. They are intended to help families understand the law so they can better support their children.
