During a special Board of Education meeting on Thursday, June 3rd, the Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education voted to appoint a new member to the BOE.

In a unanimous decision, Mary Tommelein was selected as the new Trustee for the Board of Education. She will fill the position that was recently vacated.

Tommelein was one of four candidates vying for the vacant seat, following the resignation of Treasurer John Benzing.

“I have a proven track record of putting the needs of students first. A school board member needs to be willing to support administration and staff and help them achieve the goals that have been established,” said Tommelein. “I want to look at data from a variety of sources and use that information to establish shared goals and initiatives.”

Tommelein has an extensive background in public education. For nearly 39 years, Mary was a teacher and a counselor, serving Tecumseh Public Schools from 1983 to 2011. She then worked for the Lenawee Intermediate School District from 2011 to 2015. Tommelein returned to TPS in 2015 and retired in June 2020. She is currently an adjunct professor at Eastern Michigan University.

"I am very much looking forward to the positive energy that Mary will bring to the Board”, said Superintendent Rick Hilderley.

Mary Tommelein will be sworn in at the June 14th Board of Education meeting. Her term runs through 2022.
