Public health officials in Lenawee County will not require local school districts, including Tecumseh Public Schools, to abide by Michigan's COVID-19 quarantine guidelines for students, though they do still recommend it.

Tecumseh Public Schools and the other eleven public school districts in Lenawee County will no longer quarantine K-12 students if they are identified as 'close contacts' to positive COVID-19 cases. However, that could change if quarantine is required by the Lenawee County Health Department, which would consist of an outbreak within the school or if the close contact occurred in the home.

The change in regulations came after the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that school quarantine guidelines will now be enforced by local health departments instead of the state.

The Lenawee County Health Department will no longer issue countywide orders requiring schools to comply with state quarantine guidelines, but do still recommend it.

Local health leaders said data from Lenawee County public school districts suggests COVID-19 spread is not occurring within the school environment. 

School employees are not impacted by the change in quarantine rules and are still required to isolate as required by state epidemic rules. School masks mandates are also still enforced by MDHHS.

Although students may not be required to quarantine, Tecumseh Public Schools will still conduct contact tracing and will inform those individuals who are believed to have been in close contact with a COVID-19 positive person.
