Board of Education Selects Mr. Matt Hilton as Next Superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools

Tecumseh Public Schools proudly announces Mr. Matt Hilton as the incoming Superintendent following a rigorous selection process. With extensive experience in educational leadership, Mr. Hilton currently serves as the Executive Director of Elementary Education at Ann Arbor Public Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a Math/Science Composite and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Michigan State University. The Board of Education unanimously selected Mr. Hilton out of 23 candidates, with negotiations underway for his assumed start date of May 20, 2024.

The quest for a new school superintendent has been initiated by the Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education, prompted by the retirement announcement of the current TPS Superintendent, Richard W. Hilderley, in August of 2023. The board unanimously chose the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to spearhead the search for a new superintendent. Superintendent Hilderley will conclude his tenure as superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools on June 30, 2024.

Superintendent Interviews

The search for the next superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools is winding down, as the interview process will begin on Saturday, March 16, 2024. At the Special Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday, March 12, board members selected four candidates for the superintendent position to interview. The Board expressed satisfaction with the quality of the candidate pool, which attracted 23 applicants.

Candidates and the times they will be interviewed on Saturday, March 16, are as follows:

  • Stephen Doerr - 9 am

    • Current Superintendent of East Jackson Schools (since 2016)

  • Aaron Shinn - 10:10 am

    • Current Principal of Milan High School (since 2016)

  • Kimberly Irish - 11:20 am

    • Current Principal of Tecumseh High School (since 2022)

  • Matt Hilton - 1 pm

    • Current Executive Director for Elementary Education at Ann Arbor Public Schools (since 2021)

Second round interviews will be held on Tuesday, March 19. The Board of Education has selected two finalists for a second round of interview questions.

Candidates and the times they will be interviewed on Tuesday, March 19, are as follows:

  • Stephen Doerr - 6 pm

    • Current Superintendent of East Jackson Schools (since 2016)

  • Matt Hilton - 7:30 pm

    • Current Executive Director for Elementary Education at Ann Arbor Public Schools (since 2021)

There will be a meet and greet with the candidates at the Media Center of Tecumseh High School at 4 pm on Tuesday, March 19.

To gather your thoughts and opinions, the search firm, Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) created a brief survey and encouraged all stakeholders to complete it.

The survey aimed to capture thoughts three key areas:

  1. What are the unique skills, qualifications, and characteristics desired of the new superintendent?

  2. What are the challenges facing Tecumseh Public Schools in the next three to five years?

  3. What is important to you?

Responses will be anonymous and will play a role in guiding the board's search process.
